The UK's Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) Scheme: What You Need to Know
The Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is a digital system introduced by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) to streamline travel to the UK. This permission, which is electronically linked to the traveller’s passport, will be fully implemented for eligible visitors by 2 April 2025.
Currently, the scheme applies to nationals of Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia. Its broader rollout aims to enhance border security and minimise delays for non-visa nationals entering the UK.
What Is an ETA?
An ETA is not a physical document but a digital travel authorisation linked to the traveller’s passport. It costs £10 and is valid for either two years or until the passport expires—whichever comes first.
ETA holders can stay in the UK for up to six months for:
Tourism.
Visiting friends or family.
Short-term studies.
Limited business activities.
When an ETA expires, a new application will be required, along with the payment of the fee.
Who Will Need an ETA?
By April 2025, all nationals from visa-exempt countries (e.g., the USA and EU nations) will need an ETA to enter the UK. However, some groups are exempt:
British and Irish citizens.
Individuals with a valid UK visa (e.g., Visitor visa).
Those with permission to live, work, or study in the UK (e.g., settled or pre-settled status).
Holders of British Overseas Territories citizen passports.
Residents of Ireland travelling from within the Common Travel Area (Ireland, Guernsey, Jersey, or the Isle of Man).
Rollout Timeline for ETA Applications
The scheme’s implementation will occur in phases:
Currently in effect: Nationals of Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, UAE, and Saudi Arabia must already hold an ETA to enter the UK.
From 8 January 2025: Non-European, non-visa nationals will require an ETA. Applications open 27 November 2024.
From 2 April 2025: European, non-visa nationals must obtain an ETA. Applications open 5 March 2025.
Travellers from countries already requiring a Visitor visa to enter the UK are not affected by this change.
If you are unsure about your country’s eligibility, you can consult the official list of nationalities requiring an ETA via thislink.
